DHUMNODI BEEL WITH A NEW HOPE FOR LIVING OF RANGPUR DIVISION

Some 700 landless fishermen families are now dreaming for their food security and economic well-being after getting rights of fish farming in the huge Dhumnodi Beel water body under Kawnia upazila here.
As per the present government's pisciculture policy of 'Jal Jar Jola Tar', the landless fishermen of the adjoining villages recently won the long legal battle of freeing the vast Dhumnodi Beel from the illegal captors.
Under the banner of Social-based Landless and Smaller Fishermen Unnayan Sangstha, the beneficiary fishermen family members yesterday expressed happiness after releasing 400 kg fish fires in the Dhumnodi Beel with a new hope for living.
The beneficiary fishermen families are planning to release some 20,000 kg (20 tonnes) fish fries into the water body this season to produce tens of hundreds of tonnes of fish every year through coordinated efforts under their organisation.
Adviser of the organisation Syed Ahsan Habib Babu, it's President Mamtaz Uddin and Azizul were present at a discussion arranged there yesterday afternoon when the land less and have- nots group fishermen released the fish fries in the Dhumnodi Beel.
The speakers said some influential quarters kept the Beel under their illegal occupation for a long time snatching away the rights of living and livelihoods of the local poor and landless fishermen.
Thanking the present government, they said pisciculture by the fishermen in the Dhumnodi Beel would bring a revolutionary socio-economic change and ensure food security for some 700 landless fisherman families there.
