History of Thakurgaon district (RANGPUR division)

Thakurgaon district is in the northeast corner of Bangladesh, it is a part of the Himalayan plain land. Thakurgaon subdivision was established in 1860 and in 1984 Takurgaon subdivision was split off Dinajpur and became a separate district (i.e. Thakurgaon District). The district consists of 2 municipalities, 18 wards, 32 mahallas, 5 upazilas, 51 union parishads, 643 mouzas and 643 villages.
Area:1809.52 square kilometers.

Distance from the capital:467 km .

Boundary: This district is surrounded by Dinajpur district on its south, Panchagarh district to the east and India on its west and north sides.

Population: 1196429; male 51.04%, female 48.96%.

Religion: Muslim 74.97%, Hindu 24.05%, Christian 0.54%, Buddhist 0.05% and others 0.39%

Ethnic groups: Santal

Literacy rate: Average literacy 27.3%; male 36.80% and female 17.2%.

Remarkable Educational institutions: College 27. primary teachers’ training institute 1, vocational training institute 1, vocational textile institute 1, sugarcane training institute 1, motor driving institute 1.

Historical Specialty: Tevega Movement spread over Thakurgaon district extensively. During the Tebhaga Movement 35 peasants were killed and many wounded when police fired on a procession. During the liberation war the Pak army conducted mass killing in this area.

Main crops: Paddy, wheat, potato, pulse, sugarcane and vegetables. The sugarcane plantation became the main livelihood of the native.

Thakurgaon Town: This town consists of 9 wards and 23 mahallas. The area of the town is 10.70 sq km. The Town has a population of 40336; male 51.62%, female 48.38%; population density per sq km 3770. Literacy rate among the town people is 58.5%. Thakurgaon Sadar has an average literacy rate of 30.1% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate. Trere are many beautiful and historical places in the town. There is also a mass grave in Thakurgaon Town which carries the memory of 1971.
