Condition of Sugar mills located in Rangpur Division

All the sugar mills located under the Rangpur division have been closed one after another.
Last of the series is a mill in Panchagorh has also been closed. Sources said that the scarcity of sugar-cane and the low production of sugar are the reasons behind the closure of these sugar mills. No sugar mills of this zone could produce the expected quantity of sugar.  Following the consecutive loss in the last 20 years all the sugar mills of this region were closed and the quantity of the losses was estimated at more than 1,000 crore of taka.
Following the closure of all the sugar mills in this division, the future of more than 5,500 officers and the employees involved in producing sugar became completely uncertain and on the other hand at least 25,000 growers who were dependant on the sugar-cane farming are now cultivating the alternative crops instead of their profitable sugar cane.
The sugar mills and corporations sources said that  the production of  25,438 metric tones of sugar were targeted through the five sugar mills in this division by crushing 3,57,000  metric  tones of sugar cane in the season . But only 16,660 metric tones of sugar could be produced. The sugar mills of this zone began to crush the sugar cane by turn since the December last year. But no mill could produce sugar up to the expectation.
In this season the value of each maund of sugar cane was fixed at taka 100 at the mill gate which is Tk 20 more than that of last year.
The mills authority said that even after increasing the price the production of sugar cane could not be increased for lack of sugar cane. Four sugar mills of Rangpur zone had to be closed three weeks ago. Last of all the remaining sugar mill of Panchagorh was closed on March, 6.
This mill also could not produce the expected quantity of sugar.  The general manager of the sugar mills  Sramik union Md  Jamal Hossain told reporters due to the increasing tea farming in Panchagorh district the lands for the sugar cane cultivation will not be found here in the near future.
The sugar corporation sources revealed each sugar mill across the country has been incurring loss from 10 to 12 crores taka every year since 1990. According to that estimate the five sugar mills of the zone incurred a loss of 1,200 crores taka during the last 20 years.
The sources disclosed the Shyampur sugar mill of Rangpur began to produce sugar on December- 2  of last year with the production target of 3,987 metric tones of sugar by taking the amount of  the 160  crores  taka  loss  on it’s shoulder . But it  stopped on January -12 and by this  time the mill produced 2,355 metric tones of sugar. At this it incurred a loss of near about 10 crores taka .
The managing director of the Shaympur sugar mill Md Abdul Ajij said that following the poor sugar cane cultivation and the less juice in the sugar canes this mill had to incur the loss.  The same condition is prevailing in the Gaibandha sugar mill . This mill by taking the burden of more than Tk 142 crore loss started to produce sugar on December, 9 of last year with the production target of 3,150 metric tones of sugar.
But it also stopped on January, 6.  The said source revealed that the sugar mill of Setabgani upazila town  in Dinajpur district which started the production of sugar on December -2 of last year with the production target of 4,500 metric tones  but it sopped in January by producing 3,740 metric tones.  The manager director of this mill Md Abdul Latif  told that due to the sugar cane crisis the target could not be fulfilled .
On the other hand the Thakurgoan sugar mill started the production with the production target of 6,300 metric tones of sugar on December -2 of last year but after producing 4,695 metric tones of sugar it stopped on February-7.
The authority disclosed that in want of the sugar cane the sugar mills of this region stopped one by one.  The concerned sources said every year these sugar mills are incurring crore of taka loss.
The correspondent came to know by talking to the mill authority that following the insufficient sugarcane farming and due to the adverse weather as there are less juice in the sugarcane the mills are unable to produce the expected sugar.  So in accordance with the afore-said sources the mills had to be stopped in order to prevent the further loss.
