History of Rangpur Medical College



 
Rangpur Medical College is one of the major government medical colleges in Bangladesh, positioned in Rangpur District under new Rangpur Division.
Location  Rangpur Medical College is positioned in Rangpur, 330 kilometers from Dhaka, and 210 km from Rajshahi District. It is located in the northwest part of the city of Rangpur, situated by the side of the inter-country highway connecting India and Nepal. It is well connected by rail, road and air with the capital city Dhaka.  

Rangpur Medical College was established in 1970 during the phase of East Pakistan. Governor General of the then East Pakistan, Munaim Khan laid the foundation of this Medical College in1969. The Medical College is placed about two km north to Rangpur town in the part of Dhap, Jail road opposite to district jail and very near to Rangpur cantonment area.The  College happening with 50 students in its first batch. Now each year, 175 students get admitted in this medical college for MBBS course. Other than MBBS course there are several postgraduate courses including DCH, ,DFM, MS in Gynae & Obs, MS in General Surgery, MD in Internal Medicine and MD in Paediatrics. It is a fully residential  College with facilities of sufficient doctors quarter, outsized central mosjid, playing field and gymnasium for students. There are three hostels for boys and two hostels for the girl students. Beside these three are divide doctors hostels for ladies and gents for the trainee doctors. Each year ten seats are fixed specially for international students of South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives. The medical college is running with several other joined teaching hospitals in addition to its own. These are the infectious disease hospital, hospital for tuberculosis and chest disease, and three thana health complexes in rural settings of Rangpur district. New inclusions since 1991 are the nuclear medicine center, coronary care unit, diarrhoeal disease control and training unit, neuromedicine, neurosurgery,urology, hepatology medicine, paediatric hepatology, respiratory medicine,endocrine and metabolic diseases, paediatric surgery, radiotherapy, physical medicine unit, and burn unit. The General Medical Council of the United Kingdom has recognized the graduates of this college with effect from 1 January 1996. Currently running Rp-40 batc.
